The proposals, which were unveiled by chancellor George Osborne in his summer budget, would give councils the power to decide Sunday trading hours.
The measures are likely to be included in the Cities and Local Government Devolution Bill and debated within the next 10 days.
Traditional MPs believe the overhaul would threaten family life and harm the Church. The size of the Tory rebellion, combined with the Labour benches, could be enough to defeat the bill.
Currently, only small shops are allowed to open for more than six hours on a Sunday; the changes could allow big retailers to follow suit.
In July a number of fashion retail businesses backed the proposals, arguing the move will bring the UK in line with its European neighbours. |
